The work is carried out by volunteers, who have received guidelines and advice from Jewish Care on health and safety issues. No charge is made for time or labour, but clients pay for the cost of all materials used.
The Fix-it Scheme volunteer will assess the job to be done and will then agree with the client on what materials need to be purchased. The volunteer will buy them and give the client a receipt.
The scheme does not replace work carried out by professional tradesmen such as electricians, plumbers and carpenters and there may be a limit to the time our volunteers have available.
Typical jobs that can be done include:
Please note, we don't do electrical or plumbing work, work involving gas or gas appliances, work involving large power tools, gardening, fencing or any sort of decorating, plastering, roofing or gutter work.
The scheme is co-ordinated by our occupational therapist. You can contact her to find out more on 020 8922 2000. Referrals are generally made by Jewish Care social workers or home care assistants.
At Stepney Day Centre, Redbridge JCC and Brenner Community Centre you can book a Fix-it volunteer via the Day Centre Organiser.
