One Big Friday Night a Big Success

Date: Friday 26 June 2009

Friday 26 June was a BIG success! Approximately 20,000 GBP has already been raised, and we are still receiving donations from hosts and guests.

Over 2,000 people took part, with over 200 people registering to host One Big Friday Night in their homes. The aim of One Big Friday Night was for the Jewish community to host special Shabbat dinners to raise money for Jewish Care. Instead of bringing their host a gift, guests were asked to make a donation.

Commenting on One Big Friday Night, the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, said: “I give my wholehearted support to this wonderfully creative initiative. Shabbat is a special time for familyIn association with The Jewish Chronicle and friends and it is entirely appropriate that we remember and support those in our community cared for by Jewish Care. If we individually take part, collectively we can make a bigger difference.”

One of the participants of One Big Friday Night was Jewish Care volunteer Simon Davies, whose parents hosted a One Big Friday Night. 29 people attended the dinner where a traditional four course Friday night dinner was served. The evening was a great opportunity for family and friends to get together, catch up and sing songs.

Simon was delighted that the dinner was so successful and said: “I am thrilled that we raised £500 for such a good cause. It was great that as a family we could do something together for Jewish Care. There was a warm atmosphere and the food was great.”

Based on the success of this event, we plan to make this an annual initiative – so keep a look out for next year’s date! If you're keen to hold a Big Friday Night before then, even better - you can still register for your free Shabbat pack and hold your event at any time in the year. Just complete the form below.

Why get involved?
Thanks to improved health care and better nutrition, we are living longer now than ever before. Anyone you like! Family, friends – you could even use this as an opportunity to invite people you haven’t seen for a while.

How will I raise funds?
Instead of bringing you a gift, ask your guests to make a donation to Jewish Care instead. We’ll give you donation forms in advance for guests to fill in and send back individually, or you can send them all back at the same time if you prefer.

Where will my money go?
Jewish Care provides over 70 different services to 7000 members of the community every week. Our social work service, carers’ support service, helpline and day centres receive no local or central government support, so every donation really will make a difference. Here are some examples of what your money could pay for:

£25    A Jewish Care social worker to assess someone who needs support.

£50    A physiotherapist to visit a home, keeping the residents mobile.

£100   Kiddushim to help residents enjoy the Jewish elements of our care which make our       services unique

£250  A professional carer for a week at one of our homes, helping our
residents to maintain their dignity while treating them with compassion and respect.

£500   Running costs of a care bus to help isolated members go to and
           from a day centre.

£1000 A week’s respite break in a home specialising in dementia care.
