Dr Ronald Cohen
I was an anaesthetist for 40 years, during which time, blunted a few needles, set fire to the volatile agents - and stopped adjusting the lights for the surgeons, (which ostensibly was to improve visualisation of the operating field, but in reality nothing more than a massage of their ego's), however, we do need them to give us work. In truth, the majority of surgeons I worked with were brilliant.
When I retired, I volunteered to do some driving for Jewish Care, as I am a practical sort of bloke, preferring the doing to the talking.
My first task was to drive a Care Bus to take some delightful ladies from Hertfordshire, (the young@herts group) to Waddesdon Manor for a tour of the house and lunch. On arrival at the Manor our bus was boarded and tickets were dispensed by a jolly chap who gave us all a ticket and then as an afterthought asked if I wanted to see the Manor. Apparently I was the first bus driver to take advantage of the free ticket to see Waddesdon Manor!
I was then told to drive the bus to the bus parking lot, having dropped off the passengers, and REVERSE the bus ( I had never driven a vehicle as large as this backwards - I had had FORWARDS experience during the journey from Borehamwood to Waddesdon but not backwards ), past the parked monoliths, down a narrow lane, being careful not to upend approaching wheelchairs, visitors, avoiding the flower beds on the left and of course the buses on the right. I managed all this with great success and a feeling of real achievement!
Since then, I have been happy to do several one-off driving jobs, sometimes by car and occasionally motorbike for Jewish Care.
